Wyze Cam got in touch with me lately and wanting me to check out their latest security camera. The Wyze Cam Pan – as the name implies, you already know that this will be a PTZ or pan, tilt and zoom camera. This will retail for $30 dollars which I’m pretty sure it is one of the cheapest 1080P WiFi camera that has the Pan tilt zoom function. (27)
Let’s check out the features:
It is a 1080p full HD camera with a 120° field of view
It records footage at 15 frames per second and has an 8x digital zoom.
One neat feature of this camera is that it pans 360° pretty fast… under 3 seconds. It has a rotation speed of 110° per second. It just doesn’t pan but also tilts up and down 93° (33)
It has a motion tracking feature where it automatically tracks and follows the movement in the camera’s field of view. It has clear night vision with 6 LEDs and provides clear images up to 30 feet. (13)
It has 2 way audio and records motion detected events for 14 days free in the AWS cloud.
or it can also record to a micro SD card, motion events or even continuously 24/7.
It supports from 8GB to 32 GB micro SD card.
It is only able to connect to a 2.4 GHz Wifi.
So, let’s open it up. (30)
We have the quick start guide.
A 6 feet micro USB cable
A power adapter
And the camera itself – we have the lens on top, the status light and the light sensor at the front.
At the bottom, we have the reset button, the micro SD card slot and the mic.
The camera sits on top of a circular base.
An the back, we have the speakers and a USB slot. On the base is the power supply slot.
Let’s plug it in and set it up. Let’s wait for the yellow light to flash and push the setup/reset button at the bottom.
Click “ready to connect” when you hear the voice prompt. Choose your WiFi network and this will generate a QR code that you need to show the camera.
Follow all the other steps to connect to the camera.
Click upgrade if prompted.
Let’s check out the settings.
You can change the resolution between Standard or HD.
Change camera’s night vision to auto, on or off.
Click the gear icon for settings…
And we have the alert settings…
Which we can choose from motion detection, sound detection, smoke alarm or carbon monoxide detection.
We can change the sensitivity
We can also easily schedule the alerts and choose the day and time frame when you don’t want to get notified.
And we have the advanced settings where you can set the local storage if you want to install a micro SD card to record motion events or record 24/7.
We have motor controls where you can adjust the rotation speed of the camera.
We have the pan scan settings which you can use the default waypoints where the camera will pan and stop up to 4 areas to basically give you a 360 degree monitoring. The camera will stop for 10 seconds then will move to the next position. This can be customized and will show you later on how to do it.
We have the night vision mode again here…
You also have an option to turn on or off the camera’s status light.
Rotate the image to 180° if you want to install this in a ceiling which is doable but might be too bulky to look at.
We have a time stamp watermark and record sound options.
On the main camera screen, we have the speaker icon to listen to the camera.
We can also record the current camera’s view and save directly to the phone’s photo or video album.
Then there is the mic for 2 way audio which I’ll do a proper demo later on.
We can also take a snap shot of the current footage with the camera icon which goes straight to the album.
The we have extra features like the motion tracking which when on, the camera will follow the movement. Not 100% reliable but works.
Then we have the pan scan and motion tagging which will get into more later on.
On the notification tab, these are the motion alert footages that are stored in the cloud and usually only last for 12 seconds.
On the view playback option though are the footages that are stored in the micro SD card and will get the whole motion activity or even whole day’s worth of footage if you set it to record 24/7. It is on a time line and the shaded areas means there are recorded videos.
You can easily install a micro SD card from 8GB to 32 GB by inserting it to the micro SD card slot at the bottom of the camera.
Let’s test the alert notification. I remember there is a delay of about 10-15 seconds on the Wyze cam 2…
and it is about the same with the new Wyze Pan camera. This is something that Wyze can improve upon.
Now, let’s test the motion tracking…it works ok. If you move pretty quick, the camera will lose you…
Now, let’s check out the pan scan feature… by default it has preset way points but you can customize it and set your own 4 areas that the camera will stop and monitor.
The night vision is pretty good. it has 6 LEDs that you will barely see with the naked eye..so it is not distracting and is an ideal camera for baby monitoring
Motion tracking also works pretty good at night….
As you can see, the Wyze Cam Pan camera has a lot of features for a 30 dollar camera. Video and Audio quality is pretty good day or night. The motion tracking works and panning can be very quick and also I like that you can customize the area to monitor in the pan scan feature.
There is a delay in motion alert notification which is around 10-15 seconds and also the cool off between alerts is a bit long and it is around 5 minutes in my testing. But I’m not going to complain and Wyze can easily change this with a firmware update…after all this is a 30 dollar camera and not a 200 dollar nest.
