I am doing a part 2 of the Nest vs. Ring video just to update and clarify some things….There is definitely 2 divided groups of people on these brands…either they like it or don’t…First off, I’m going to link the reviews I made on these products in the description down below. I just recently checked out Nest when they offered a lower pricing on their subscription, so I only have the Nest outdoor cam and their new to the market Nest Hello video doorbell.
As to Ring, I think I have all their current cameras. Ring have their issues of their own but I want to focus more on the issue I have with Nest..BTW, I purchased all these cameras on my own…nothing was sent to me for free… and here are the receipts.
On the Ring pro, I was able to purchase it for $80 bucks because it was an upgrade. I did have their original Ring doorbell and also have reviewed their Ring doorbell 2 which I didn’t really like.
Next, I need to clarify that the Nest actually has a theft replacement policy just for the Nest Hello not their other cameras…which I think was an after thought because it is not mentioned on their product box or any documentation that came with it. Even their website…on Nest Hello’s product page…it is not mentioned. You can only see it on their support page.
Ring has this added on their product packaging on all their cameras. Also on their website on the camera product page…as well as on their support page. If you read both brand’s theft replacement policy, some sentences were copied word for word. I will let you decide who copied who.
So, that is out of the way… Next, I need to clarify that the Nest Hello is actually not a 1080p camera..it is a HD UXGA 1600 x 1200 resolution..which has an aspect ratio of 4:3 and not the usual 16:9 like the 1080p. Basically, it has more view vertically than horizontal. When comparing it with the Ring and installed on the same spot and not side by side, you will notice that you cannot see my front door but you will see more of the top and the bottom floor which is ideal to check if there are packages on the floor or to see more of the face of the person if they are too close to the doorbell.

Now, let’s talk about the motion detection delay.
This time I’m testing the “cool down period” or the retrigger time and see when the camera will alert me again because of motion.
It has been around 6 mins from 9:37 to 9:43.. Now, we will check if Nest Hello will send out an alert.
I saw in one of the comments that supposedly Nest retrigger time is 30 minutes and I don’t know if that’s true. For, me a camera needs to arm itself again within a minute or at least give the user an option to change the setting..
Nest Hello and it will be the same thing with their outdoor cam. their cool down period is way longer than I thought…This is not good and I’ll tell you why..
It has been 6 minutes and the camera is not giving me any alerts…
The next footage you will see is from the Ring doorbell pro’s motion detected footage… it saved and recorded the footage before the motion was detected…at least 3 seconds before..and you will hear the notfication…but anyhow, a lot of people that comes to your front door will not ring the doorbell…they might just knock to scope the place out..so, if you have a delay in notification, you will miss the opputunity to talk to them or to scare them off…
Also to add to Nest’s delay and the longer retriggering time, its push notification or even if you also checked off the email notification…It uses the phone’s generic app tone which on my Iphone is called the tritone.. do you think this alert which will only happen at least one time in a 6 minute time frame is enough to wake you up at night?
I don’t think so…Also, for me if I’m awake my phone is usually in my pocket…I will barely hear or feel that alert…
Now, compare with the Ring…
With Ring, you can customize the alert so that you know which camera was triggered…
Lastly, I’ll give you a scenario…Delivery guy came in to drop off your package…as you probably know they are in a hurry and they may or may not push the doorbell.. this one will…but you already know that you are too late to answer them..you are inside the house doing something and planning to get the package in a bit…5 minutes later…this guy came in…snooping around… stayed in your front door for a while…then picked up your package….you didn’t get an alert because Nest is still in its cool off period…so you decided to finish whatever you are doing and 30 minutes later, you checked the package and it was gone…Now, you just have a footage of the theft…but if you got an alert, I bet you could have prevented the theft…
In my situation, this is why I want a camera that has an instant motion alert… I have a Reolink NVR system with a live monitor for the cameras…I use my Ring cameras mostly for the alerts and I look at the monitor to see who or what triggered it…
By the time you get an alert from Nest…the person already left the camera’s field of view.
Another feature that Ring has is the Ring neighborhood. This is basically a platform where you can upload your videos from your cameras and not just Ring’s..any footage you have and will be shown to your community or to people around your area that has the Ring app… The ring app is free and anybody can join…So, this is like the nextdoor app except that you can upload and show videos and mostly use to let your neighborhood know about suspicious people, thefts, crimes and safety alerts….
Click on the settings and you can customize the app to show your posts..which I don’t have any yet…Link your social network…Facebook and nextdoor..change your neighborhood name…customize the area you want to get alerts…just by moving the blue dots around the map around your area…then click save..
You can set the time what time you want to get the alerts.. and you can change the alert tone so that you will know that somebody from your area posted a new video..
This is a pretty good feature..and I don’t think Nest has this…
Well, that’s it guys…as some of you might have predicted..I’m going to keep the Ring doorbell pro..I will also keep the Nest Hello and see if Nest will update the motion alert delay and the retriggering time. So, if you have the Nest Hello or even their other cameras, check to see if you have a delay in motion notification and also if you know what is the cool off period before the camera is ready to send an alert again when it senses motion…let me know in the comments down below…These are the things that I want Nest to update: real time notification, decrease cool off time, record both audio as I demoed in my first video, and have customized alerts and not use the phones generic tones… If you agree to this, forward this video to Nest… let them know..I’ll be putting in my request too…The last time I did this with the Ring…they listened and made an update.. it took a while though….
